Windings

Surrounding the core are multiple layers of tightly wound yarn. These give the ball its shape, strength, compression, and feel. The quality and tension of the windings directly impact circumference, weight, compression consistency, and durability.

Multiple layers of tightly wound yarn surround the cork core, building up the ball's shape and compression from the inside out.

What Windings Affect

  • Circumference — winding tension controls the ball's final size (standard: 9–9.25 inches)
  • Weight — winding density contributes to the ball's weight (standard: 5–5.25 oz)
  • Compression Consistency — tight, even windings produce consistent compression ball to ball
  • Shape Retention — quality windings hold their form under repeated impact
  • Durability — better winding materials resist softening and deformation over time
  • Energy Transfer — tighter windings improve the "pop" and rebound off the bat

Poor winding tension leads to soft spots, inconsistent compression, and unpredictable flight.

Wool Windings

  • Highest quality winding material
  • Maintains shape and compression longest
  • Most consistent performance over time
  • Used in professional and collegiate baseballs
  • Pro/collegiate balls use 85–100% wool windings

Wool / Polyester Blends

  • Mid-tier winding material
  • Good balance of durability and cost
  • Common in quality high school and practice baseballs

Cotton Windings

  • Lower-priced winding option
  • Softer feel, loses tension faster than wool
  • Flattens and softens more quickly over time
  • Common in entry-level and lower-cost baseballs
